Glenade is located between Manorhamilton and Kinlough along the R280 road. Glenade valley is renouned as one of the finest examples of a glacial valley in europe. It is also known as the Jealous valley which derives from the ledgend of Parthanlonand his wife Dealghait, the first man to reach Ireland after the biblical flood. Legend has it that they could not agree on the astetic beauty of the area, one loved it and the other hated it.
Glenade Lake is associated with a local legend. A monster called the Dobharchu or water dog is said to have lived in the lake. A young woman Grace Connolly was killed by the monster in 1722 as she was washing clothes at the lake. When her husband found her lifeless body he avenged her death by slaying the monster. But the beasts companion awoke from the lake and chased the man and his brother many miles to Cashelgarron, below Benbulben in Sligo. There they managed to slay the beast. Nearby there is an ancient grave yard called Conwell Cemetery which contains the tombstone of Grace Collolly where a stone carving of the Dobharchu can be seen.
Glenade lake offers good course fishing with stocks of Pike Roach and Perch.
