Rossinver is a village situated in north County Leitrim.  The village is on the junction of the R281 and R282.  Rossinver in Irish means wooded estuary.

Local areas of interest:

The Organic Centre was established in 1995 in Rossinver in North County Leitrim.  The centre promotes organic gardening and farming as well as sustainable living through educational courses, tours and workshops.  There are demonstration gardens to be viewed and the centre is open to visitor’s everyday.  More information can be found on the following website

Fowleys Falls - This is a stunning mile long walk along the Glenaniff River which follows a series of waterfalls as the water ambles down the Glenaniff hills.  More information can be found on the Rossinver Community Development Company Website .

Barr Scenic Route - This route takes you through the Glenaniff valley looking down at stunning views of Lough Melvin and the surrounding mountains.



Lough Melvin is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty.  It is renounded for its unique plant and animal life as well as salmon and trout fishing.  The lake is 8 miles long by 2 miles wide and borders the counties Fermanagh and Leitrim.  There are four types of genetically distinct trout that are unique to this lake brown, gilaroo, sonaghan and ferox.  There are plenty of fish and boat hire facilities around the lake.

Eden Herb Garden and Nursery was established in 1975 and is one of the earliest organic growers in Ireland.  They have over one hundred and fifty varieties of herb plants and they also produce salads and vegetables.  They supply local restaurants and are also open to the public, visitors are welcome to have a look around.  For more information please call 071 89 54122.

The Ballagh Centre was an old protestant church which was restored by the Rossinver Community Development Company Ltd.  It has beautiful restored stain glass windows.  Today it is used for community activities and is also a centre for training.  A range of locally produced craft products are available for sale in the centre.  More information about this building can be found on the following website

Leitrim Pottery is based in Rossinver.  They create functional and decorative stoneware and earthenware pottery.  They also run courses in pottery for beginners throughout the year.  More information can be found on


Rossinver Convent - The American order of nuns, The Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement has this convent constructed in the 1930’s when they decided to locate to this area.  This was their only convent in Ireland.  The Bishop of Kilmore granted them permission to locate in his dioceses.  The nuns moved in May 15, 1935, during the years that followed thirty-nine Leitrim nuns joined and a further twenty-eight from surrounding counties. In the 1960’s there was a fall off in vocations and the convent has since been sold.                   

A 9th Century Grave Slab in the Rossinver Church Yard - A monastic site was founded in the 6th century, close to the shore of Lough Melvin by St Mogue who died in 632AD. A cross inscribed slab can be seen in the graveyard as a remainder of the early monastery.  Another Christian site in Rossinver is St Molaise’s Well, which is south of the village.
