St Patricks Day celebration in Kiltyclogher

  • Monday, 29 February 2016 13:41

On March 17th from 1.30-3pm the village of Kiltyclogher in North Leitrim will be transformed by a vibrant celebration involving music, drama, period costume and displays of traditional crafts.

The community in Kiltyclogher with funding from the National 1916:2016 Centenary Commemoration Committee and Leitrim County Council have decided to recreate the heady, turbulent atmosphere of march 1916, a time of great upheaval and change.

Street theatre will be an important aspect of the event with speeches from Cumann na mBan, anti-conscriptionists and revolutionary republicans.  With locals and visitors alike dressed in period costume the celebration promises to be very atmospheric.  There will be a street market atmosphere as the village will be filled with hawkers selling traditional goods and trades people going about their business.

A highlight of the day is an impressive exhibition presented by the Irish Volunteers Commemorative Organisation.  This non-political, non-profit organisation dedicated to recording and the history and artefacts of the Irish Volunteers in the years 1913-1922.  Their exhibition showcases weapons, uniforms, medals, documents and photographs from this era.  This is an absolute must for those interested in history and 1916.

The exhibition will be in Kiltyclogher Community Centre on Thursday 17th - Friday 18th March from 10 am til 4pm.  Admission is free so don't miss it!
