Prin Duignan's recent local history publication 'A Right not a Privilege' St Joseph's College Manorhamilton & Educational Initiatives  1930-1970 is now available to buy on line at www.drumlinpublications.com. The book chronicles the struggle of a small community to get full secondary education in Manorhamilton, leading finally to the opening in 1955 of St Joseph's College, a lay, co-educational non denominational school. It recalls the roles played in North Leitrim education by prominent churchmen such as Cardinal Mc Rory and Bishops Finegan, Lyons, and Quinn of Kilmore and it details the incidents of disagreement and dispute between local clergy and the Manorhamilton school committees.
Other aspects of the story include events leading to the establishment of the Vocational school and the short-lived Brady private school (set up by Paul Brady's grandmother Oonagh) and the coming of the De La Salle Brothers in 1940.
