Manorhamilton's Largest Employers

You may be surprised to learn that the town of Manorhamilton is home to not only to the beautiful rolling hills and countryside but also to thriving large business.  The town has within its boundaries three large and successful companies employing over 200 staff between them.  You have possibly driven past the businesses not really knowing what goes on inside the walls, here is a short overview of those businesses.

Merenda Limited

Merenda has been owned and run by the Haslette family since its foundation. Oliver Haslette took over a disused warehouse in the town of Manorhamilton in 1984 and set up the company on this site.  Merenda has progressively grown over the years and today its worldwide customer base is testament to the reputation that the company has built up.

The company moved from its original plant, to a new custom built production facility in 2000. At peak production, Merenda employs 50 people in its 40,000 Sq. Ft. production facility.

Over the years we have added to our product offering by opening a major new production line manufacturing Rolled Thickwood Product. We also produce recycled wood briquettes.

Coupled with our expertise and understanding in producing wrapping veneer and related products, Merenda has earned a reputation for helpfulness, reliability & a respect for quality. As a result Merenda competes effectively on a worldwide scale.  For over 25 years, we have succeeded by building a strong foundation of expertise in our core competency of wood veneers.

Elastometall Ireland

Elastometall was established in 1980.  It is a family business, which has since evolved into a global company with plants in Ireland, the USA and Germany.

Manufacturing over 5,000 standard and bespoke products and presently supply one of the largest ranges of engine mounts in the industry.

Elastometall also manufacture in-house, their own tooling, metal parts and rubber compounds.  Other processes include compression and injection moulding, sandblasting, extrusion, mould design & manufacture.  They also have over 800 different natural and synthetic rubber compounds to choose from.

This unique ability, to control all processes from tool design concept to finished product, allows them to offer a superior quality product and complete customer satisfaction.

The existing customer base which includes Siemens, VW/Audi, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Mannesmann, BOMAG, KTR and caterpillar is testimony to the reputation that Elastometall have built up over the years.  Being one of the first ISO 9002 registered companies in their sector, proving that they are committed to total quality management.

MCi (Mirror Controls International Irl)

The facility in Manorhamilton was established in 1978 by Frese (Ireland) Ltd, a German owned tier 1 automotive supplier of rear view mirrors.  At that time the company employed 25 people and the facility was 600m2, manufacturing interior rear view mirrors.

Between 1988 and 1992 the company expanded both its customer and product base adding exterior rear view mirrors to its capabilities.  Employment over this period grew to 75 employees and the facility was extended to 2000m2.

In 1994 Frese (Ireland) Ltd was acquired by Donnelly Corp. and Donnelly Vision Systems Europe Ltd was formed – D.V.S.E.  From 1994 to 2001 the operation continued to grow employing at its height 140 staff.  The business was now a tier 1 supplier to the automotive industry, moulding and assembling interior and exterior mirror components and electrical mirror glass actuators.

On September 17th 2001 Eaton’s Mirror Controls Division acquired certain assets of Donnelly Vision Systems Europe Ltd.  The contractual transition period concluded on 6th January 2003.  In August 2007 the business was acquired by Bregal Capital LLP and in August 2012 the business was sold to Egeria.

In 2010 the Mirror Controls European operations were consolidated with all EU production moving to Manorhamilton.  The Manorhamilton facility employs 160 people and the plant manufactures car mirror glass actuators and Power fold actuators for passenger cars and light trucks.

Mirror actuators are mounted behind the mirror glass in the exterior mirror of the vehicle and Power fold in the body of the mirror to electrically fold the mirror head towards the side of the vehicle.  All are electrically operated with a range of connector types and options such as memory control on the glass actuators.

The products are supplied to customers in Europe mainly but some variants to Asia and North America.  All moulded component production is in house, averaging 40 million components per month.  The Manorhamilton site is 4000m2 operating a 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

So far from being a sleepy town in North Leitrim, Manorhamilton is a thriving centre of industry.
